Meet one of your Coaches;

My Name is Charlie Tietgen, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competitor and Coach at E3, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and Kansas City native.

We all know how hard it is to motivate yourself to go to normal gyms near Overland Park. The awkward silence shared between a large group of people, smiled at through closed lips in the unfortunate occurrence of eye contact This only seems to be broken up by the clanging of weights, the whine of treadmills, and occasionally, the wayward fart. Now take a moment to imagine how much easier it would be to get there working with professional, focused, and motivated coaching staff in Overland Park dedicated to helping you reach your goals. Say goodbye to having to decide on a workout program, and have faith that our team will lead you to your exact fitness goals just like so many others have before you. Whether it is to lose weight, gain muscle, or improve your cardio, BJJ can get you there.

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

One of the most common reservations that I hear as a coach is that many people feel like they need to be in good shape before they even step near a gym. Now I’m sure sometimes it’s just an excuse but if you are one of the many people that believe this, let me explain why I believe differently. We follow a crawl, walk, run approach to getting students ready for the rigors of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Getting thrown into the deep end and being expected to hang with the rest of the crew is old-school and ineffective. The instructors here work closely with our new students to make sure they are on track to meet their goals, without risking injury. Our program takes an objective look at training. Implementing strategies in a way that people of all fitness levels in Kansas City can enjoy.

What results can I expect?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most enjoyable ways to get in the best shape of your life! If you don’t already know, BJJ gives you a full-body workout. Perfect for those looking to lose weight, and increase endurance and muscle tone. The students that come to our gym looking to lose weight, lose on average 20 pounds in the course of 12 weeks. Many go on to lose, even more, some losing nearly 60-80 pounds! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a fitness program! Our program is DESIGNED TO GET YOU IN SHAPE.

I don’t like going to the gym.

Now you’ve already listened to me rant about how awesome BJJ is as a workout program, but how is it enjoyable? Think about the usual things people turn to when they are looking to lose weight. Treadmills, running, swimming, rowing, stationary bikes. What do all of these things have in common? Nobody enjoys doing any of these things because they offer no engagement for your brain! This is where jiu-jitsu comes in, it gives your brain a puzzle to solve while you work out. This instantly ends workout boredom while you develop a useful life skill. This is one of the biggest reasons why our program is so enjoyable and successful.

What makes Brazilian Jiu jitsu Such an effective martial Art?

Jiu-jitsu is a slow skill to learn and it is important to have a good introduction to lay a solid foundation. Your first few sessions will be spent touring the basic positions and concepts that make jiu-jitsu such an effective martial art. Conditioning and mobility exercises will build the mental toughness, physical strength, and flexibility you need for live grappling. This is where we test our techniques against an opponent resisting at 100%, in a way that is safe for both practitioners. This back-and-forth testing is what keeps jiu-jitsu at the forefront of martial arts. If a technique is ineffective in its ability to control an opponent, it is thrown straight out the window.

What makes Jiu JItsu such an enjoyable martial art?

Jiu-Jitsu is as much of a workout for your body as it is for your mind. Just as artists express themselves through painting and sculptures. Dancers, figure skaters, gymnasts, all of these athletes use their art as a form of self-expression and Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are no different. Once you have a solid understanding of the underlying concepts, BJJ allows you to dive deep into different areas of the grappling world, letting you discover and hone techniques that you enjoy. Some prefer techniques from the open guard, some prefer takedowns, some like attacks from the back, others like to attack from a mounted position. This allows you to build a game that is unique to you and effective for your body type. We give you the pieces and teach you how to use them, but it is up to you to create your own masterpiece.

I have been going to E3 Jiu-Jitsu now for 1 year. From the first moment you walk through the doors everyone here makes you feel like you’ve always been here. So welcoming and kind are the owners. You don’t need to know a thing about Jiu-Jitsu. Charlie is an amazing instructor trained by world class Jiu-Jitsu champions. You will not only lose weight and get in the best shape of your life, but you will also learn proper self-defense as well. My 10 year old daughter also does Jiu-Jitsu here and she loves learning with the other kids in her classes. A great place to train martial arts with some of the best people I know. I can’t think of any other gym I would want to continue my Jiu-Jitsu journey with. Do yourself a favor and give this martial arts academy a try.

I’ve been training the grappling art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu here in Overland Park for about 5 months and the whole facility and staff are very friendly and great. It’s family friendly and the martial arts training is great. Regardless of your skill level you’ll feel right at home and welcomed as well. The facility is great, the bathrooms have a shower, there’s plenty of mat space, they’ve got plenty of heavy bags to practice your striking in kickboxing, and they have a microwave and refrigerator to store your post-workout shakes and other items.

I cannot stress enough how great everyone here is. There are kids that are 5 year old in the kids classes and the instructor takes his time to be sure everyone is learning at their own pace. My daughter asks me every day if she has class that night because she loves martial arts so much. For adult martial arts classes the instructor makes sure everyone understands the drills. It’s great exercise and you learn something while exercising. It’s more than a business, it’s a genuine community from the first moment you walk in the door. They are definitely doing great things for everyone in Overland Park.

Very affordable price, quality facilities with a great location in Overland Park.  Charlie is amazing with my young child who is very shy and nervous. His enthusiasm and excitement ensures he develops a love for the martial arts. He has a great time when he gets over his nerves!
